(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Peter Sand graduated from Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School in 2005. His principal says he was a good athlete and student.
On Monday night, he died in the prime of his life.
Sand was part of a group celebrating his cousin's 21st birthday in St. Paul on Monday night.
Police say the group was out drinking. When they got back, Sand went to sleep.
He was found dead Tuesday morning in the living room of his cousin's home, though it's unclear if he died of alcohol poisoning.
"He liked being around people, he did the right things, he worked hard, wasn't afraid to speak out when he needed to and set a good example for everybody," said Willie Rauen, Peterís former Football Coach at Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School.
In 2004, Sand was a star linebacker on Zumbrota-Mazeppa's football team. He was all-conference. He would have been a junior next year at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The school lists him as a social studies major.
