A man has died after being seriously injured in a fire at a Plymouth apartment building late Thursday night.

Firefighters and police responded to the 3300 block of Highway 169, at which a fire burned inside one of the building's third-floor units, around 11 p.m.

Firefighters discovered heavy smoke in the hallways and learned one person was still inside the apartment. They were able to rescue the man who, according to Plymouth Police Chief Mike Goldstein, suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns. Authorities said later Friday morning the man had died.

Authorities said the man is believed to have set the fire intentionally. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of death as suicide.

Goldstein said the man lived with another person, who was able to exit the building without injury.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly and residents of the apartment building were able to exit the building unharmed.

"I ended up seeing a crowd of people out front and it didn't seem too weird at first because usually when we have fires, fire alarm scares, it's really nothing." resident Piper Guttormson said. "We saw (firefighters) rolling out the hose about 10 minutes after the alarms initially started going off, and started thinking, 'Well, better get down here.'"
