Monday was a tragic one for members of the Brooklyn Park Police Department.
Officer Andy Suerth, 39, died following a medical incident while on an out-of-state trip with his family.
He leaves behind his wife Sara and two children. Sara is also a police officer in Brooklyn Park.
Police chief Craig Enevoldsen said Suerth served more than 14 years on the force, and he was more like family to his fellow officers.
"His nickname was Big Andy because he is a big guy," Enevoldsen said. "When you talk about the Teddy Bear effect, that was Andy because he was very kind and compassionate."
Enevoldsen said a direct liaison has been assigned to the Suerth family, and counseling services are available for fellow officers.
"My goal, and the department's goal at this point, is to support Andy's family in any way that we can," he said. "Whether that be personally, professionally or with planning.
"We also need to support the officers that are still here, (and) who are trying to navigate their way through this loss."
The Suerth family has created a Go Fund Me page. No funeral services have been arranged at this point.
