A child suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle in Fridley.

Police say the incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. in the 500 block of 61st Avenue Northeast. When officers arrived, they found the child, who had suffered serious injuries.

"There's a lot of pedestrian traffic and a lot of cars coming through here, we're still working to determine where the child was hit, if he was in a crosswalk and what the circumstances were," said Captain Ryan George, with Fridley Police Department.

A witness told officers the child was crossing the street when an SUV struck him. Police say the driver of the SUV did not appear to be impaired and is cooperating with the investigation.

The child was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.
