Resistance To School Calendar Change Grows

(ABC 6 News) -- Summer may have seemed very short for those students heading into their last weekend before school starts on Tuesday.

But one local school district is thinking about shortening summer even more next year, and resistance to the idea is growing.

As ABC 6 has reported, the Albert Lea Public School District is considering a change for the 2015-2016 school calendar.

Under the new proposal, the calendar would be amended to include two week breaks in October, December, and another in March.

The summer break would also be shortened, and opponents say the change would leave less time for summer jobs, family vacations, and adding the new breaks could increase daycare costs for families.

Jennifer Hanson, who has three children in the district, recently launched an online petition against the proposed change, and on Friday afternoon more than 180 people had already added their signature.

"I don't feel the parents have had a voice,” Hanson said. “I think that at the meetings and things like that, we've gotten a chance to talk, but I don't think that we're being heard."

Currently the proposal is just that, a proposal, with no action scheduled by the school board.

Today the superintendent was unavailable, but ABC 6 reached out to every member of the school board.

Those that did call back declined to comment.

In the past, district leaders have said the changes would allow for more remedial time for students who need help.
