(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Investigators believe a cigarette caused a fire Wednesday night that killed two people in Mason City.
The house is located at 1516 S. Coolidge Ave. in Mason City. Emergency crews were called shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Inside, they found 62-year-old Jessie Pierce on the floor of the home. He was taken to the hospital where he died.
59-year-old Cherie McClemons was found unconscious in a bedroom. She was also taken to the hospital, and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, where she died Thursday afternoon.
Officials believe the fire started in a recliner in the living room, sparked by a cigarette in an ashtray the fell between the seat and arm of the chair.
