WEST UNION, Iowa (AP) - One person is dead after a shooting involving a law enforcement officer at a northeast Iowa hospital.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been called to investigate the Saturday morning shooting at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union. Authorities say a law enforcement officer from Fayette County was shot, but was shielded by a bulletproof vest.

Hospital CEO Steve Stark confirms that one person was shot, but says the hospital is secure and all staff members are safe.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the officer was from the West Union police department or the Fayette County sheriff's office.
