IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Department of Public Safety has rescinded the firing of a veteran state patrol supervisor, giving him a new one-year assignment after paying him not to work for 17 months.

A settlement obtained by The Associated Press details the end of the department's disciplinary case against Sgt. Kevin Knebel, former assistant commander of the patrol post in Mason City.

The department suspended Knebel in January 2013 during a misconduct investigation and fired him months later, saying he lied during an investigation into the use of sick leave by a Clear Lake officer who was Knebel's friend.

Knebel denied wrongdoing, arguing he was being treated unfairly after a spotless 20-year career. He appealed the firing administratively.

State law allows fired department supervisors to keep their pay during appeals.
