(ABC 6 News) -- For retailers, it's the busiest time of year outside of Christmas. For families, it’s another hit to the household budget.

"They can stretch their dollar more so when they come to our store here," said Stacy Wisemore at the Austin Salvation Army thrift store.

“I've got a bag full of stuff right here and it was real cheap," said a woman named Sharon, who was shopping at the thrift store with her daughter and grandson.

"We are selling more clothes, shoes, backpacks, any of the back to school items," Wisemore said.

"I buy my grandson's clothes here once in a while," Sharon told us. “I pretty much wear Salvation Army clothes because it's cheaper."

The National Retail Federation estimates that the average family will spend nearly 670-dollars on clothes, shoes, supplies and electronic this back-to-school season. That's up about five percent from last year.

"We would have to go without food if we couldn't find stuff at the Salvation Army" Sharon said.

“Throughout the year we save school supplies or clothes," Wisemore said. “We get a lot of brand new items, so we save them, and when it gets to be back to school time we put them in the store at a much lesser price than they would pay at a department store."

And at places like the salvation army thrift store, keeping the racks full depends on you.

"We can always use more donations of all sorts," Wisemore said. “We're asking the public to please bring it in now because this is when it is needed."
