CANNON FALLS, Minn. (AP) - A Minnesota State Patrol says a trooper responding to a traffic accident slammed into another car in Cannon Falls, killing two people in the other vehicle.

The collision happened Friday about 2:35 p.m. Cannon Falls is about 35 miles southeast of St. Paul.

State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske (ROS'-kee) says 48-year-old state trooper Scott Reps was airlifted to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Roeske says Reps' squad had its lights flashing and sirens activated. He says the other vehicle pulled out of a parking lot, and the Reps slammed into it.

The collision killed Norman Scott, the 78-year-old man driving the other vehicle, and his passenger, 79-year-old Geneva Scott. Both were from Cannon Falls.

State Patrol Lt. Col. Matt Langer says authorities haven't determined how fast Reps was going.

(ABC 6 NEWS) --A Minnesota State Patrol has confirmed that two people were killed in a crash involving a State Patrol squad car in Cannon Falls Friday afternoon.

The Patrol says a Trooper was responding to an injury crash when a vehicle pulled out in front of his squad as he drove through Cannon Falls. The two people in the car were killed. The Trooper was airlifted to Mayo Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened near 65th Avenue and County Road 24 just outside of the Country Side Antique Mall in Cannon Falls. According to the accident report, there were three vehicles involved.

Some heard it before they saw it.

"It was lots of sirens, lots of lights," said Cannon Falls resident Mike Levesque.

And some caught it with a routine glance.

"I saw a cop car come down and another car came out form the parking lot onto the road here," said Michelle Smith of Cannon Falls.

Smith works at a McDonald's right next to 65th Avenue and County Road 24, just outside the Antique Mall in Cannon Falls. She was looking outside the to-go window when it happened.

"A big boom, a big crash," she said.

That crash took two lives, leaving behind crushed and indistinguishable vehicles, including one trooper squad car.

"Once we've seen it, it was unbelievable, all of the cars flew and everything else, it was crazy," said Doug Rechtzigel, an owner of a nearby auto-parts business. He reviewed the deadly accident on his surveillance tape, which is attached to his nearby business. The tape and machinery has been taken by authorities for investigation.

"The car that was coming out of McDonald's was taking a left hand turn going back to Cannon Falls, northbound," said Rechtzigel.

That's when he said it struck the southbound State Patrol car that was responding to a separate injury crash.

"The highway patrol spun around and both cars were about ten to fifteen feet in the air probably, the green car hit the jeep, it was actually just coming from that parking lot, just an innocent bystander," said Levesque.

The State Patrol officer was air-lifted to Mayo Hospital. The other bodies have yet to be identified.

"It's very, very disturbing, especially on a July 4th weekend. I mean, who wants their family members to be injured, hurt, or deceased," said Levesque.

For many bystanders, this is one of the last things they would expect, or want, to see on a holiday that is meant to be celebrated with those that they love in this country.

The State Patrol says the names of those involved will be released early Saturday morning.
