It's a case based largely on investigative technology that was still in its infancy 20 years ago. And on Wednesday morning, Michael Cisneros went on trial for a 1994 murder.

"John Snyder, junior was murdered," Cerro Gordo County Attorney Carlyle Dalen told a jury of five women and nine men. “He was beaten, he was thrown into willow creek where he drowned."

It was July 20th, 1994. John Snyder, Senior called 9-1-1 to report his toddler son was missing. The boy’s diaper and pajama bottoms were found later that day. there were blood stains on the pajamas.

The next day, the boy's body was found in Willow Creek.

"And when you have a felony you're required to provide a DNA sample," prosecutor Carlyle Dalen told the jury.

And in 2012 ... with the bloody pajamas still held as evidence ... investigators found a match: "Who's the match to? Michael Cisneros," Dalen told the jury.

“The DNA's found where he admits he was," defense attorney Letitia Turner  said during her opening statement to the jury.

Cisneros defense team offered its own explanation for why his blood were on the pajamas; they said Cisneros had cut his hand on the evening John Snyder, junior disappeared. And was walking later that night along Willow Creek

"Not a lot of lighting down there. he picked something up off the ground," defense attorney Letitia Turner said.

That something turned out to be John Snyder, junior's pajama bottoms.

"There is no solid connection between mister Cisneros and John Snyder," attorney Letitia Turner said.

Michael Cisneros' murder trial continues on Thursday at the Cerro Gordo county law enforcement complex.
