(ABC 6 News) -- On Tuesday afternoon, Austin played host to an elite military group dedicated to showing civilians the precision and teamwork of the armed forces.

The Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team performed in front of hundreds on Austin's Main Street, flipping and spinning their M-1 rifles with fixed bayonets.

Members are chosen from more than 250 airmen in the Honor Guard, with only the most exceptional making the cut.

One of the team's leaders spent his childhood summers in Austin, and he said it was an honor to be back doing what he loves.

"It's the thrill of a lifetime to be able to come back as part of my job,” said Master Sgt. Scott Slindee. “I have to pinch myself, I'm getting paid to be here right now. It's pretty remarkable for me."

Earlier this year, the Air Force squad was named the best drill team in the military, beating out teams from each of the other service branches.
