(ABC 6 News) -- Rochester is known to bring people from around the world for treatment, but it's not often that each individual's culture is shared with others that have different backgrounds.

But all day on the Peace Plaza downtown, the Walk Around the World event exposed those cultures and shaped them with one another, while bringing awareness to the growing problem of refugees throughout the globe.

One stage, countless cultures, songs and dances from around the world were performed by many who came for one purpose: to share.

Rochester residents caught a glimpse of the world through a melody from singers, or through a pattern of footsteps with pounding drums.

But some passed on their heritage not only through music, but also through art that contained ideas, ideas that can be universally appreciated.

The purpose of Walk Around the World is to expose the diversity that thrives in Rochester.

But diversity and adding an endless spectrum of color to this country came at a price.

Refugees fled their countries to escape hardship and this event raises awareness on widespread displacement worldwide. There's over 32 thousand people who become refuges a day throughout the globe.

Event speakers emphasized that despite any differences, be it skin color, a shade of clothing, or the method in a dance, everyone, at least on Saturday on the Peace Plaza, is a family.

The event wrapped up with a showing of the film "The Citizen" in conjunction with Movies on the Plaza.
