(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The commander of the USS Minnesota submarine returned to his hometown of Rochester.
"Lot of memories came back," Tanaka said. "I got to see a number of folks who were very important part of my life growing up and continue to remain so."
U.S. Navy Commander Brian Tanaka grew up in Rochester and made a stop at the mayor's office Thursday.
"I say to everyone on board the ship we're all Minnesotans and I never miss an opportunity to talk about the great things that go on in the state of Minnesota and the pride that I have from being from Rochester Minnesota," Tanaka said.
Tanaka will lead a crew of 130 officers on the nuclear-powered attack submarine. His first duty is getting the submarine ready for deployment at it's home port in Connecticut.
He took command of the ship in February.
When the ship is ready, Tanaka and the USS Minnesota will go on a year long deployment in support of national security around the world.
