(ABC 6 News)-- Destination Medical Center is one step closer to becoming a reality after a joint work session this afternoon.

“The DMC is off and running and we just finished a very exciting opportunity for our planners to come together with the two boards, and really talk and share ideas, thoughts, concepts about what Rochester could become in the future,” said Lisa Clarke from the Economic Development Agency.

The Destination Medical Center Corporation and the Economic Development Agency met to discuss what can be supported in Rochester and how to move forward with DMC plans.

“We’ve collected information and talked to people throughout the community starting to bring forward some of the ideas that are bubbling up for our team,” said DMC Transportation Planning Principal Tom Brennan.

The group looked at eight areas of focus to make Rochester a destination city. Transportation, hospitality and overall livability were a few areas discussed.

“All of these areas need to knit together to create a destination city,” said Clarke. “How do all those areas knit together? What do other cities look like? What are some examples of other communities that we can bring to Rochester to really create our future over the next 20 years?”

A few ideas include revamping 2nd street for a better first impression, adding an entertainment feature to the riverfront and shortening the distance between Mayo Clininc Saint Marys Campus and downtown.

“Rochester has beautiful assets and we want to take that and just grow that into a community and focus on the needs of patients, visitors and community members,” said Clarke.

The next joint meeting is set for July 10th. At that meeting, planners will provide the cost behind the proposed ideas.
