(ABC 6 News) -- After months of controversy and grumblings from some nearby residents, developers officially broke ground on the Shopko building in Kasson today.
The site has been cleared and now it's time for the 36-thousand square foot building to go up.
"I think there were times where we weren't sure if we'd get to this point, but it feels good that we could deliver for the community for our client and hopefully for the folks not only of Kasson but for Mantorville also,” said developer, Paul Tucci.
In order to build a Shopko in the Lion's Park location, four houses along the edge of the park were bought by the city and demolished. But there are still some residents in that area who have been unhappy with the idea of a new Shopko from the beginning. Some even say they plan on taking their business elsewhere.
"I ain't going to shop there. I don't really care that much for Shopko anyway, but I would shop there in town and stuff but when they put it down there and took our park away, no I’ll go someplace else and shop,” said resident Jerry Struthers
The new store is expected to open in November. While that Lion’s park has been demolished, Shopko is helping to rebuild the park a few blocks away at a larger location. The site has a proposed 18 hole disk park.
