(KSTP) -- Capt. Paul Amis, a native of Plymouth, is home from deployment in Afghanistan three months early.

He used his extra time to surprise his mom at Target Field on Saturday.

Amis has been promoted to Regimental Support Commander with the Old Guard in Washington, D.C., and is now stationed state-side for the next two years.

"I am here to surprise my mom at Target Field," Amis said. "She's going to bawl her eyes out."

"It's been quite the operation keeping it a secret."

And she did.

After three deployments to the Middle East in four years and earning a Bronze Star, Amis is making more than just his mom proud.

"He has just been an awesome leader for his men," Carol Amis, his mom, said. "Last deployment, his men knew that if Captain Amis was leading them out on a forward operation, they were going to come back."

The Amis family dried their tears and joined today's Heart Walk in Minneapolis, where Carol was volunteering. Some young walkers even stopped to thank Capt. Amis for his service.

"(This is) unreal, the best surprise ever," Carol Amis said. "(I've) been waiting for him to come home."

It was a whole day of surprises for the Amis family. After the Heart Walk, Capt. Amis went up north to surprise his dad, who was at a men's retreat for the weekend.
