(ABC 6 NEWS) -- "Morgan is special not only because of her athletic talent, but also because she's such a good leader on our team," GMLOS girls track & field coach Andrea McKichan said.
Morgan Schmitz is one of just two seniors for GMLOS, and she is putting up some impressive numbers in this, her senior year.
"At the end of last year, I was really disappointed with how I did, so I just wanted to get that much better over the offseason," Schmitz said.
So far in 2014, Schmitz has set a personal best in the shot put - 36 feet, one inch.
"Her best throw overall in the past was a 34-8, I think," McKichan said. "So for her to PR by that much her senior year has been awesome."
"The discus has always been my thing, moreso than shot put, but lately, shot put has been going a lot better than disc, so I feel more consistent with the shot put lately, but with the discus, any day it's anyone's game," Schmitz said.
Schmitz's best throw in the discus is 121 feet, one inch.
"She would really like to throw about one foot farther because that would get her the school record," McKichan said.
"The school record's always been my goal in both events, but I think getting to state would be a bigger thing for me right now, just because that's something I've always wanted to do - get back to the state meet."
