(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Mayo catcher Brad Mathiowetz has been a machine at the plate this year.

"Things are just really clicking right now. I'm seeing the ball really well deep into the zone and putting good swings on them," Mathiowetz said.

In the first four games of the season, he's hitting .600.

"He's been hitting the ball hard, and that's what we're going to need if we're going to be a good team," said Spartans head coach Dan Hoefs.

So far, Brad's three home runs, five doubles, and 13 RBIs have helped the team to a 3-1 start.

"There's no doubt he's probably our top run producer," said Hoefs.

One of those home runs was a walk-off grand slam against Austin last week.

"I was just thinking drive the ball hard, put a good swing on it, hopefully bring one or two guys in," said Mathiowetz.

And as a catcher, Brad also controls the game on the defensive end as well.

"In four games already this year, he's already picked off a couple, three or four base runners where he throws in behind them and that's always a plus because it kind of slows down other teams running games," said Hoefs.

He says the relationships he has with his pitchers have also added to the team's early success.

"I think he does a better than average job handling pitchers, which is an important job for catchers to do," said Hoefs.

"We're all good friends, so they know they can trust me behind the plate and I'll do whatever it takes to get them ahead in the count and win the game," said Mathiowetz.
