(ABC 6 NEWS) -- "It seems like he's really started the season off like he's in mid-season form," Southland baseball coach Scott Retterath said.

Taylar Schwartz brought his 'A' game to Blooming Prairie last Friday.

The Southland senior struck out eight Awesome Blossoms in a 14-0 win.

"Taylar worked hard in the offseason, and he's showing it right now," Retterath said.

"After warming up, I felt pretty loose, limber, and I felt like I could go long in the game," Schwartz said.

Not only did Schwartz pitch a one-hit shoutout, he helped himself at the plate, too.

"From even his junior year to his senior year, he got a lot stronger and he got a lot quicker," Retterath said.

"I've been lifting ever since baseball ended last year," Schwartz said. "I've done winter camps, and I've worked on my form, trying to get it down."

Southland has fallen short of state the last couple years, losing in the championship twice, but Schwartz thinks it's finally the Rebels turn.

"I think this year is the year," Schwartz said. "We have a deep pitching staff. The first three games we've had shutouts."

"Taylar compliments all the other guys well, and hopefully Taylar can keep hitting the ball the way he has been," Retterath said.
