(ABC 6 NEWS) -- As a three-year captain, Abhi Lamba knows what it takes to be a leader on the court.
"Be a little bit of a hype machine. Match days, get out there and scream a little louder than the other guys. Just make sure everyone's pumped up and ready to go," said the John Marshall senior.
"He's a great team guy. He's really, really positive with some of the younger guys we've had on the team. He's just an ideal captain," said JM head coach Josh Heiden.
He did a good job of that during the Rockets season opener.
Lamba went 6-0, 6-1 against his opponent, helping John Marshall earn their first 'W' of the season.
"It's just really exciting to be in my senior year and get out there playing with these guys. Our team has a renewed strength, we've got a lot of depth; new guys are a lot of fun. It's just going to be a great year," said Lamba.
Abhi is the number two singles player on the team, and for good reason.
"He can play guys that are steady; he can play guys that are attacking. When he needs to be aggressive, he can. When he needs to be patient, he can," said Heiden.
"I like to think I can mix it up. I can bring the heat on my serve, I can bring spin. I don't think I have a big-time style. I guess I'm pretty solid on the baseline," said Lamba.
"I would like to see him go undefeated. I think he's that good. He could win our conference for sure at number two singles," said Heiden.
"That's a goal for me, honestly. I can't say it'll happen for sure, but I certainly have the ability to do it," said Lamba.
