(ABC 6 News) -- It's Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa and with that comes some safety advice from officials.

The idea of children wearing a helmet gained momentum after a national tornado outbreak in 2011.  Now experts are saying adults should wear them too.

The Center for Disease Control says there's no proof that wearing a helmet during a tornado will save your life.  However, a recent study found that 22 percent of deaths during the 2011 tornado outbreak were caused by traumatic head injuries.

"We always tell people make a kit have a plan, this is part of make a kit have a plan," Johnson County Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Wilson said.

Officials say the best way to save yourself is still to get to a safe place.  A helmet is just another layer of protection.
