Several lawmakers are now pushing to stop a data privacy change that was first reported on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

The Department of Public Safety is changing the way it handles driver's license and motor vehicle data effective May 12. They say the change will better protect your personal data.

Right now companies can buy driver's license and motor vehicle data for all Minnesotans. But under the new policy, DPS wants to charge $5 per driver record and they will only be available during business hours on a secure online system.

Critics say the change will increase car insurance premiums and prevent some drivers from getting safety recall notices.

Seven state representatives, four members of the DFL party and three Republicans are sponsoring a bill aimed at stopping the new policy.

It also calls for an in-depth study of the issue.

Those lawmakers are pushing for a legislative hearing in the next two weeks.
