A 20-year-old Marine from Waseca was killed in action in Afghanistan on February 28th. And Monday, he was laid to rest in his hometown.
Corporal Caleb Erickson attended Waseca High School, and graduated in 2012. People there, and all across the community came together Monday, to say their goodbyes.
"A great number of people, I have no idea how many, came out to honor Caleb. And it's a sad moment," said community member Ken Lenz.
It was a sea of red, white, and blue at Grace Lutheran Church, as people from all over showed their gratitude to Corporal Erickson, and support for his family.
It was a very somber moment as his casket was loaded into the hearse. It hit close to home for the people here, even people who didn't know Corporal Erickson personally.
"I had a lump in my throat for the young man and I thought at that moment as the hearse went by, that could just as well have been our son, Aaron," said Lenz.
He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a Marine. Corporal Erickson's memory will live on forever.
"I'm very sad for the family and he had a lot of life left and he was a super guy. A patriot. A Christian," said Lenz.
I'm told things were pretty quiet at the school Monday, as classmates, teachers, and even the principal left school this morning, to attend Corporal Erickson's funeral.
