The grounds crew at Target Field was out first thing Monday morning to start clearing snow in time for the Twins' April 7 home opener. It takes at least a week to get the field cleared of all the snow but that's only the beginning.
Workers got started around 9:30 a.m. on the first really warm day we've had in months. They are slowly making progress by working section by section with one small snowblower and even working by hand with a few shovels so they don't damage the field.
Then comes the heat.
"The entire field is actually heated from underneath," said Chris Iles, Communications Director for the Minnesota Twins. "We turn it up to 50 degrees to kind of trick the grass into thinking it's further along into spring than it actually is so by the time we pull those tarps off, which will be later this month, the grass will be bright green while our lawns are brown and mucky."
The Twins' home opener is on April 7 and tickets are still available if you need some help thinking spring.
