The body of a fallen Marine from Minnesota is being returned to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Twenty-year-old Lance Cpl. Caleb Erickson from Waseca was killed by a suicide bomber Friday morning while serving in Afghanistan, according to his sister.

Erickson was seated in the gunner's turret on the last truck in the convoy when a suicide bomber in another vehicle crashed into the convoy, Erickson's sister Ruebecca said. He was knocked unconscious and was treated by the scene corpsman before being airlifted to a medical facility, where he later died from injuries he sustained from the attack.

Ruebecca said three other people were also in his convoy. As of now, they are not suffering from any life threatening injuries.

Erickson attended Waseca High School where he was involved in football and wrestling, Ruebecca said.
He joined the Marine Corps after graduating high school in 2012, Ruebecca said.

According to family and friends, Erickson was deployed to Afghanistan last fall and was expected to return to the United States in May.

"We have been told that the day of the incident, before he left, he had said to his rack mate, who was also a close friend that he would see him when he got back," Ruebecca said in an email to KSTP. "He had that huge smile on his face that he always had."

The military says the return of Erickson's body to the Air Force base has been delayed until Tuesday due to bad weather on the East Coast.

Erickson's unit was based at Camp Lejeune, N.C
