(ABC 6 NEWS) – We have received new information in regards to that fatal crash in Blooming Prairie Wednesday morning. The victim's family has confirmed that Sarah Kerns was driving her mother and father to Mayo Clinic in Rochester when the accident happened.
Sarah's husband, Thomas Kerns, tells ABC 6 News that his wife hit a patch of ice, lost control and rolled into the ditch. He says Sarah's father, 76-year-old Marvin Widlund, was not wearing his seatbelt because he was using a colostomy bag. He says Marvin was thrown into the back of the vehicle and that Sarah performed CPR on her father while they were still in the vehicle. Sarah was able to get her father breathing again. But Thomas says Marvin's heart stopped before first responders could get there and that they were unable to revive him once again.
Thomas says both Sarah and her mother, 70-year-old Ruth Widlund, were wearing their seatbelts and suffered only minor injuries.
Mayo One responded to the scene, but left without a patient. Ruth was transported to the hospital in Austin, but released. Both women are now resting at home.
Thomas says while the family is in mourning, they are also counting their blessings, as it could have been much, much worse.
