Road Shelters are Being Opened as Road Conditions in Minnesota Worsens

(ABC 6 News) -- Shelters are being opened, roads are closed and the State Patrol and other agencies advise no travel during this extreme winter weather.

Shelters are opening in Freeborn, Renville and Cottonwood counties as blizzard conditions grip southern and central Minnesota.

The Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) Division is working with local officials to establish shelters in several cities. Governor Mark Dayton authorized the use of National Guard armories in Albert Lea and Olivia for shelters in those communities. HSEM will continue to work with local officials to establish other shelters should they become necessary.

Officials in Cottonwood County are expecting to shelter approximately 40-50 people. A bus carrying varsity and junior varsity hockey players along with coaches and parents on their way to Sioux Falls seeking shelter at their site.

Open shelters are located in Albert Lea in Freeborn County, Renville County: Hector, Olivia, Danube, Renville, Sacred Heart, Cottonwood County: Windom.

The Minnesota State Patrol and MnDOT are advising no travel in southern and western Minnesota. Several roads are closed because of the dangerous travel conditions. All highways in the south central and southwestern part of the state are closed. A complete list of road closures is available on 511mn.org.
