(ABC 6 News) -- The Rochester Family YMCA just started a new mentoring program, and they need your help.

For a while they've had community-based mentors who meet with a child one-on-one guiding them through life's challenges.

"I like watching them grow and develop and become confident and build their self esteem and learn to skills, that's been the funnest part," mentor Maria Levy said.

But since the need has grown, the Y has started site-based mentoring where a mentor can work with a couple kids at a time.

While they welcome all mentors, there's a huge shortage of male mentors.

"We have a very long waiting list," Jenny Johnston with the Rochester Family YMCA said.  "We have about 75 boys on our waiting list right now."

If you're interested in learning more about becoming a mentor, the Y is hosting an open house Tuesday, January 28th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  You can also learn about the program at their website.
