Hitting the Century Mark

In sports, teams are always on streaks - a ten-game winning streak, a four-game losing streak - but when was the last time a team had a streak of 100?

Ask the Century boys swimming and diving team.

“100, that’s just a fairytale,” Panthers head coach Linda Freeman said.

A fairytale that started 10 years ago.

In 2004, the Century boys swim team started a winning streak. Little did they know that 10 years later, that streak would still be alive.

Last Thursday, the Panthers beat John Marshall to win their 100th straight dual meet.

“It’s unbelievable. Way back when I started swimming for this team, I thought it was so far away and now it’s here and I can hardly believe it,” said senior Michael VanDeVoorde.

“Our team’s really proud of it. We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished and we're really happy that we’ve gotten this far,” said senior Nick Fuqua.

But leading up to this point, a perfect record wasn’t their main focus.

“We approach every meet like it’s the first one, we’re 0-0, we have to go get it,” said Freeman.

“It didn’t really become a thing until this year that we kind of realized, wow, we're almost to 100,” said Fuqua.

What they did talk about is Century’s legacy of great swimming, and the number of swimmers that have gotten them to this point.

“Amazing coaches, amazing national-caliber swimmers, and it’s been cycles that just keeps going around,” said Freeman.

Last Thursday, that legacy came full circle.

“I actually saw one of the past swimmers who was on the team before I was on the team and he was there, so I mean it’s just like a great family,” said Gavin Mai.

“They won like champions. They were humble but they were proud,” said Freeman.

And they’ll stay that way, even though the streak won’t last forever.

“Sports is a metaphor for life. Nobody always wins.  We’re going to lose; someday we’ll lose and it won’t be anybody’s fault. We’ll just start over,” said Freeman.
