(ABC 6 News) -- There's a new social networking app available that connects people who are located near to one another. It's free and can be downloaded on the iPhone and it was actually created by a local student.

"People always ask you what do you want to be when you grow up,” said Colton Sinning. For Colton Sinning of Pine Island that answer has always been an innovator. Now a freshman at University of Minnesota Duluth, Colton can say he's already began his career.

"I pretty much designed the whole thing, from front to back, sketching, doing business plans,” said Colton.

Colton recently launched a brand new social media app for the iPhone called turf. It's a way to see what's going on in your specific community or school.

"Once you belong to that turf, whatever you post there everyone can see without having to add friends,” said Colton.

Posts can be messages, photos and events and you have to be in that location to belong to the turf. Colton says it's a totally different type of conversation compared to Facebook or Twitter - it's a local one.

"You now have the platform to post something and everyone understands it,” said Colton. He says there's close to a million turfs in the United States and Canada pre-programed in the app.

"A guy was at a Chicago bulls game, he posted about it,” said Colton.

Just by word of mouth, almost 2,000 users have already signed up for turf.

"At his age level I guess, I haven't seen too many kids accomplish something like this, so it's really neat to see, I think he's got big things ahead of him,” said Colton’s dad, Robert Sinning.

"When you can do something for a job, that you have a hobby in you're going to love what you do,” said Colton.

Colton hopes to expand the app to android very soon. To download the app you can search "turf app" in the iTunes store on your phone.
