WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is setting the stage for the Iraqi prime minister's visit to Washington by claiming momentum in the battle against Islamic State militants.

In a speech Thursday at the National Defense University, Biden rejected critics who say the fighting has stalled or become dominated by Iran and its proxies.

Biden says the jury's still out, but the momentum is moving in the right direction. He says the Islamic State group's "aura of invincibility has been pierced."

And he credits the Islamic State threat with helping bright together Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish factions in a power-sharing government.

Biden says the United States and international partners will continue to stand with Iraq in its fight.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi (HY'-dahr ahl ah-BAH'-dee) meets with President Barack Obama next week.
