(ABC 6 News) -- The Salvation Army was doing its job in keeping people warm Monday.

"This is the coldest day I've ever worked. I actually called in before I came to make sure they were open," said Mary Williams, who was serving soup at the facility Monday afternoon.

Williams said over 30 people came in to get shelter.

"You'd think there'd be more people coming to seek shelter, but a lot of them have actually anticipated this. They may not have the same resources as many folks, but they do know it's gonna get cold," said Dave Ferber with the Salvation Army.

Ferber says that transportation is a big issue in getting people to the Salvation Army.

"If they're used to walking or bicycling, even in the winter, days like today or this week is just not gonna let them do that," said Ferber.

Ferber says that more people actually utilize the Salvation Army during the summer as a cooling shelter.

"We do have some chairs; we do have some benches that are comfortable. We've had people sleep here, which is not a big deal especially in this cold weather," said Ferber.

"With all the donations and everything that comes to the Salvation Army, it's very helpful. If you think it's not helping people, it's helping, it helps a lot!" said Williams.
