(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Many shoppers are reviewing financial statements Thursday after Target reports 40 million credit accounts were involved in a security breach. Target says the credit card information was stolen between November 27th and December 15th.
Local banks have been working all day to help their customers affected.
"Who hasn't been to Target since Thanksgiving, especially here in Minnesota," said First Alliance Credit Union CEO Kelly McDonough.
McDonough is expecting more than a thousand of their customers to be affected by the Target credit information theft.
"We we're notified that we had a 130 and by ten o'clock we're up to 780, I expect as each hour passes we'll be notified of more and more of our members that have been impacted," said McDonough.
Like many financial institutions they've been working hard to protect their customers.
"We are going to be calling each one our members to say you're on this list and this is what we're going to do, they don't have to worry or be uncertain about what's going to happen with their card," said McDonough.
So what can you do if you are worried about credit information?
"Customers have been calling and a few of them have decided to close their cards as a precaution," said Holly Gronholz.
Gronholz of Merchants Bank says getting a new card is one of your options, but you can also simply be vigilant until you are notified by your bank or financial institution if your information was stolen.
"We're advising them to use the resources they have, with technology these days to log in and monitor things that don't seem right," said Gronholz
The timing of the security breach couldn't be worse.
"We're taking into account that it is Christmas," said McDonough.
With the banks and credit companies flooded with concerned customer, McDonough says is not to panic.
"Be patient, we will be in touch with you, in the mean time we know that your credit cards on that list so we'll be watching out for you," said McDonough.
Another tip, she says is to make sure your bank has your contact information. Many of them will contact you if you are on the list of those affected.
