(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Dan Jech made a lot of improvements to his game in the offseason.

"Probably the most notable to a fan is his ability to shoot the ball," said Mayo head coach Shaun Lang.

Fans witnessed this firsthand last week when the six-nine junior put up 25 points against Faribault and 20 against Mankato East, helping his team earn their first two wins of the season.

"I just pretty much was going out there to try and benefit the team. Just did what I could. I want to take the highest quality of shots. I want to get close to the basket," said the Spartans junior.

Towering over most opponents, Dan is a force in the paint. After all, he did have a combined total of 28 rebounds in those two games. But it's his outside game that makes him a real threat.

"From about 15 feet, he's a very, very good shooter. He put in a lot of time because kids don't just show up and shoot the ball and be at the level Dan's at right now," said Lang.

But what the casual fan might not see is how his presence in a game affects the teams entire offense.

"We realize that he's going to get double teams and he's got other teammates that can help him out, so he takes pressure off other guys if we do it right," said Lang.

"If we move the ball well I think everyone is able to have a good game. Everyone has to do their job. If everybody does that we'll win,"

And with Dan's work ethic, those wins are something fans can expect to see a lot more of.

"He's got a good chance to be a very, very good player by the end of this year, even better than he is, and into next year being a really dominant Big 9 player," said Lang.
