(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It used to be that parent teacher conferences were the only way for parents to get a good picture of what was going on in their child’s school. Today many schools are also using social media to update parents.

Kingsland Public Schools is hoping to use social media to share what's cool in their school. They are calling is the social squad. A group of staff members that are having fun taking their social media status to the next level.

"We've had Facebook and Twitter before, but we didn't feel like we we're using it to its utmost effectiveness," said Principal Chris Priebe.

Over the last few months the social squad has been responsible for ramping up their posts and tweets.

"The members of the team have kind of taken the responsibility, for example say I'm in the elementary, I'll keep my eyes and ears open for things that are happening that are worth sharing with parents," said social squad member Ann Halloran.

In just two month's they received nearly an additional 600 likes on their Facebook page. The hope is to use the social media sites to create more of a sense of community.

"To share with parents, grandparent, alumni, community members," said Principal Priebe.

"If kids are in high school they can see what's going on in the elementary school, and parents of elementary students get to see what's going on in the high school," said social squad member Morgan Rohr.

The school is also hoping to use the sites as another means to get important information out, like school closings and updates. But mainly it's to give the community an idea of what these students are up to and the progress they are making in their education.

"I think it just helps promote our school in an even better way, they don't get to see what's going on in school on a day to day basis, so that’s nice," said Rohr.

"It's just to help people understand the wonderful things that teachers and students are at Kingsland," said Priebe.
