(ABC 6 News) - Local law enforcement agencies are warning residents to be on the lookout for a scam artist, after a local couple was tricked out of $386.
Authorities say an Eyota couple received a call last week from someone claiming to be a Rochester Police Sargeant. He said the couple's son had traffic warrants for his arrest. He said if they paid off his traffic tickets over the phone, it would only cost $386. Otherwise the fine would increase by Monday.
The couple gave their debit card information to the caller before they realized it was a scam.
When the scam was reported, police called back the return number and was told by the scammer they’ve tricked residents out of $500 already and don’t plan to stop. The phone is prepaid and unable to track.
Authorities say local law enforcement agencies do not solicit money for warrants over the phone.
