(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Veterans were rejoicing on Friday. It was the groundbreaking for a new 169 acre resting place for veterans.

“This is hallowed ground and it will be that way forever,” said U.S. Congressman Tim Walz, who is a veteran himself. “This cemetery will be here and it will be maintained by the people of the United States, and specifically the people of Preston until this nation is no longer on the Earth.”

This will be the second veterans cemetery in Minnesota, the other, Fort Snelling, is approximately 120 miles north in the Twin Cities.

“It’s good for families because you always have to wait until after a funeral to be able to bury your loved ones, and by the time you make it up to the cities, it’s more difficult than coming down here,” said veteran Norm Hecimovich. “The roads are easier and simpler, so it’s really gonna be an advantage for all the people in Southeast Minnesota.”

The cemetery will include a main entrance, administration building, assembly area, pre-placed crypts, cremation and burial areas, a public storage area for urns and a memorial walk.
