JANESVILLE, Iowa (AP) - The parents of a northeast Iowa baby say they have run out of options to help their daughter with seizures so they're turning to medical marijuana to see if it helps.
KWWL television reports Maggie Selmeski, of Janesville, began having seizures at six weeks old. She continues, at 17 months, to have about 500 seizures a day. Doctors say she has infantile spasms, a specific type of seizure disorder. Four anti-seizure medications haven't worked.
Her mother, Rachael Selmeski, says she's moving to Colorado to gain access to medical marijuana in the form of an oil, which is given like medicine. It has low levels of THC, the chemical that makes people high.
Selmeski says medical marijuana could be her daughter's only chance. Treatment should begin in mid-November.
