New Leaders Bring Fresh Energy to Beargrease

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The new leadership for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is optimistic about restoring the race to its former glory.

The old board decided last week to cancel the 2014 race while they considered its future, but they handed over control Monday to a new team of leaders who plan to stage the race for its 30th running this January.

Interim president Tone Coughlin says they've assembled a team of professionals with experience in running events, advertising and marketing who are passionate about the race. He says one of their top tasks will be reaching out to former sponsors to win then back.

Organizer Linda Nervick notes the Beargrease is the longest dog sled race in the Lower 48 states and says mushers are excited the tradition will continue.
