UMinn Urges Students to Select Costumes Carefully
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - University of Minnesota officials are warning students who plan to dress up for Halloween to select their costumes with care.
Student affairs advisers sent an email asking students to pick costumes that don't "perpetuate racial, cultural or gender stereotypes."
Dean of students Danita Brown Young says she's heard complaints from students about costumes that stereotype American Indians and African Americans, although they weren't necessarily on campus.
Undergraduate student body president Mike Schmit tells the Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/1a3E8ef ) his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, sent a similar email to members that included acceptable costume suggestions and those costumes that should be avoided.
