Apples for All Meals

Fall is a great time to savor local apples.  But apples can be used for more than just dessert. Hy-Vee Registered Dietitian, Jen Haugen, will share three easy ways to incorporate apples into all parts of your day.

Breakfast

It can be as simple as pairing protein and apples.  Jen will share what are some great combinations with apples.

Lunch

Packing your lunch?  Jen will share an easy way to savor the season in a jar.  

Dinner

Sweet and savory – a favorite combination of many meals.  Jen will share an easy sandwich recipe involving apples.

Apple Turkey Sandwich

Serves 4.


All you need:

8 slices whole wheat bread
4 teaspoons light butter
4 slices Colby-jack cheese
1 Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced
4 slices bacon, cooked, broken in half
4 ounces thinly sliced turkey

All you do:

  1. Lay out four slices of whole wheat bread on cutting board.  Lightly butter one side of bread.
  2. Layer one slice of cheese, 4 apple slices, two bacon halves and turkey over bread.  Lightly butter another side of bread.  Repeat with remaining sandwiches.
  3. Over medium heat, grill sandwiches until lightly golden brown on one side, then flip.  Repeat with remaining sandwiches.
