A One Woman Team
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Katie Johnson started playing golf at a young age.
"Three or four years old is when my parents started to teach me," Johnson said.
For the past eight years, she has played competitively on a team. This year, Katie is playing at RCTC, where she is the team.
"I didn't know I was going to be the only girl. I knew there were going to be few but I didn't know I would be the only one," said Johnson.
Katie might be the only girl on the team, but she doesn't see it that way.
"I still have 11 other teammates. They just happen to be guys and it doesn't bother me," said Johnson.
In some cases, playing with the guys is an advantage.
"I think in some ways she actually likes practicing with the guys, because its competition", said RCTC golf coach Brian LaPlante.
And there is plenty that Katie's game teaches these guys.
"She's a competitor. She likes to work and she can flip that switch on. When it's time to play she wants to play, she wants to compete," said LaPlante.
Katie has played in three tournaments this year, finishing fifth at the Des Moines Invitational. And when the season is up, so is Katie eligibility.
What's not going away any time soon are the friendships she has made.
"Yeah, I've built relationships with these guys and you know I'll come back and see them," said Johnson.
