Final Design Teams Present Visions for Nicollet Mall

Nicollet Mall is on the verge of a multi-million dollar makeover.

Minnesotans packed the Guthrie Theater Tuesday night to hear visions for the project from three final design teams.

A panel of 13 expert judges will review the proposals and announce a winning team on Thursday. The finalists are James Corner Field Operations of New York, Daoust Lestage of Montreal and Tom Leader Studio of Berkeley, California. The teams were narrowed down from more than 20 submissions worldwide.

Ahead of the event, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said the goal was to pick a design team, rather than a design.

"Starting tomorrow, we're going to wipe the slate clean and then bring in all the members of the community and say tell us what you want your main street to be, then you architects go back into your office and help design it," Rybak said.

The project will cost between $20 million and $40 million dollars. The city hopes $20 million will come from the Governor's next bonding proposal. They will also be counting on assessments of surrounding property owners.

Construction is expected to begin in 2015 with an estimated completion date in 2016.
