Changes Coming to Austin High School Dress Code
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Last spring a group of students asked Austin High School Principal Bradley Bergstrom to end a rule prohibiting the wearing of tank tops. His response: “why don’t we look at the entire dress code”.
“It was too specific and too long” says Jai Oon an Austin High school senior and member of the committee responsible for changes to the dress code. The old code occupied three pages in the student handbook stating what clothing was appropriate and what was not.
“What happened is as time is going along and trends in fashion had changed we would go ahead and say you can’t do this, and can’t do that and it would just stay there” says Bergstrom. Administration had been considering a change in dress code that received the final push when students began to protest the ban against tanks.
The committee worked all summer looking at dress codes of other area schools to come up with a simplified, safe and lasting code.
The new code was presented to the student body on the first day of school and is seeking approval from the school board at a meeting Monday night. The student council is also in the process of creating a video showing what clothing items will not be approved to post on the school’s website in the next few weeks.
The basic rule is that students will need to be covered from arm pit to mid-thigh so those tank tops that started it all will be allowed.
