Sprouts Cropped Cooking Challenge 2013

(ABC 6 NEWS) – You don’t need a classroom to learn about science, food and nutrition – just ask the kids involved in the Austin Hy-Vee Sprouts program!

The Sprouts program was started by Dietitian Jen Haugen at the Austin Hy-Vee three years ago, and has since spread to more than 100 stores

More than 350 students have participated in its three years, in Austin alone!

“We're holding a ‘Sprouts Cropped’ competition, so it's a take on the Food Network ‘Chopped,’ but we're having kids harvest from the garden and then they get to create a recipe and we'll have it judged."

One of those judges was our very own Kenny King. Students were judged on how many vegetables they used, specifically how many cancer fighting vegetables.

In the end, Team Tomato took home the win, but everyone was pleased with the food the students created.
