Zumbro River Flood Prevention Meetings

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's been almost three years since the Zumbro River came up over its banks flooding hundreds of homes and businesses. Now an organization is ready to come forward with their suggestions to prevent it from happening again.

"Personally I ran some crews that helped clean up the river banks and then with other crews that helped sheet rock basements," said John Homme.

Homme who helped the communities cleanup, knows the work doesn't end there. As the chair of Zumbro and Friends he's working with several organizations to stop this from happening in the future.

"The flood back in 2010 left devastating results, now part of the whole situation is how do we prevent this from happening again," said Wendell Amstutz.

Amstruz also of Zumbro and Friends says with the help of Mankato State University  who did a flood mitigation study, they now have several options for community members to look at as far as flood prevention. Some of them include rezoning the areas where people can live near the river, controlling the flow of the river, and possibly changing farm land cropping patterns.

"Our goal is to present these options as thoughtful researched options and scientific options that can be part of the process," said Amstutz.

The groups will hold a formal presentation of the flood mitigation study next Thursday for community leaders and area legislators. They then plan to hold several town hall meetings in September to discuss the options with each community affected.

"The goal is to help the people make informed decisions about the kind of things that will keep them from happening again," said Homme.
