"Pink" Goal Set For 2014
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It doesn't officially kick-off for six months. But it's never too early to start thinking pink.
“We're going to see growth, a lot of growth," said Kathy Finley. She’s the new director of Austin’s “Paint The Town Pink” festival.
It started three years ago with a hockey game.
Two years ago, it went community-wide.
But next year's "Paint The Town Pink" promises to be the biggest ever.
"We're going to continue with some events that were very successful this past two years, and we're going to add some new events and hopefully add some new communities," director Kathy Finley told us.
Paint The Town Pink is a fund raiser for breast cancer research at the Hormel Institute.
Last year's goal was to raise $100,000 dollars. It resulted in more than $115,000 dollars in donations.
"So when we were talking about our goal for this year, why not set the bar high, so we went for $150,000 dollars" Kathy Finley told us.
“I lost my sister in April to breast cancer," Brenda Thein said.
Her sister was Barb Nelson. We first met Barb at the end of January.
“2011 I discovered a lump in my left breast, and it kept getting bigger,” she told us then. At the time she was a Paint The Town Pink volunteer ... and she was dying of cancer.
"I just want to save other people. That's the miracle I want," she told us in January.
“Barb has two daughters,” her sister, Brenda Thein, told us on Wednesday when organizers announced the goal for next year’s fund raiser. “We have a very high risk in our family, and this breast cancer research may save one of their lives. It may save someone's child."
“And the only way to fight that really is with research, and research takes money," added PTTP director Kathy Finley.
“We need to find the biggest breakthrough, and we will get there. we will get there. It might take some time, but we will get there," Brenda Thein said.
“Paint The Town Pink” 2014 will start on Valentine's Day and run through February 23rd.
A highlight again this year will be the Austin Bruins fourth annual "Paint The Rink Pink" hockey game on February 22nd
