(ABC 6 News) -- A 4-year-old girl with Autism is back home with her parents after a scare this morning when she wandered off near a busy highway in Rochester.

Police say the incident happened around 4.a.m. Friday morning near the 3700 block of North Broadway.

They were getting numerous reports of a young girl wandering closely to the highway, and when police showed up, they discovered she was wearing a Project Lifesaver bracelet, typically worn on children who have Autism.

"They don't perceive the same dangers as you and I would, that's lots of speeding cars there, and if they don't have a transmitter to help us find them and they get themselves into a dangerous situation, it could turn out poorly," says Sergeant Ryan Manguson with the Rochester Police Department.

In this case, the family is very lucky.  Before the police could check the Project Lifesaver database, the father of the girl came and found her.

Coming up tonight at 10, we'll have more on an Autism Fundraiser taking place where families can get help to purchase one of these bracelets.
