Pipe Bomb Found, Detonated in NW Rochester

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Rochester police were called to northwest Rochester Monday after an RPU worker found a suspicious item. Police have confirmed that item was a pipe bomb and that it has been detonated.

The pipe bomb was found near a power pole at the intersection of 18th Ave. NW and 18th St. NW.

"I was going out to run errands and saw the block was filled with a bunch of cops," said neighbor Jeramy Shultz.

If the sight of police blocking off their street wasn't shocking, the sound that brought them there was.

"We were standing in my kitchen and we heard this big boom," said neighbor Jordan Jensen.

Police told ABC 6 News when they arrived they found an 8-10 inch long pipe with metal caps on each side. The street was blocked off  while the Bloomington Bomb Squad was called into investigate.

After confirming that it was in fact a pipe bomb they safely detonated it. There are no suspects as to who could have placed the pipe in the area.

The incident has left this normally quiet neighborhood with questions.

"It's just weird, maybe someone just dropped it off there somehow, hopefully nothing too bad," said Shultz.

Police are still investigating this incident. They've told us they will have more information Tuesday morning. Stay with ABC 6 News for updates.
